The Supreme Court expressed unhappiness over the large number of pending cases against the MP and MLAs in various courts despite several directions given by the Supreme Court and referred the hearing on PIL for fast track courts to next week. Justices Ranjan Gogoi, Navin Sinha and KM Joseph said that the government is expecting and compelling them to pass certain orders which they feel is inappropriate at this time and not conducive for the Union of India. The Government is doing this because it doesn’t have an answer to the large number of pending cases.
The PIL has been filed by BJP leader and SC advocate Ashwini Upadhyay. On August 21, the day of last hearing, the Supreme Court gave directions to set up special courts to expedite the process of trying legislators against whom criminal cases are pending and file a status report by August 28 specifying the number of cases pending, with a break up of magisterial and sessions triable cases. The government had earlier submitted to the court that over 1581 such cases were pending. SC asked Centre to inform the Court whether the special courts were courts of session or magisterial courts and also provide the details of their territorial jurisdiction.
