The Supreme Court after giving directions to hold their first meeting next Tuesday, gave a green signal to the experts committee that is under principal secretary of the Delhi Government’s urban development department to draw a plan to clear the landfill sites at Ghazipur Bhalaswa and Okhla. Asking the panel to meet for five days in the next two weeks, the direction was given by a bench comprising Justice Madam B Lokur, Deepak Gupta and Abdul Nazeer. The Bench directed to take up the matter seriously so that it could serve as a model of development for other metropolitan cities.
The Bench had earlier showed it’s doubts on the workability of the policy to clear the dumping grounds in Ghazipur, Bhalaswa and Okhla. Justice Lokur told Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand that the bench wanted the committee that is being constituted to meet for the next two weeks for each day. The court had on August 17 asked the Lt. Governor to constitute a panel of experts and RWA members. Remarks were made after the bench noted that the panel government comprised top level persons like Principal Secretary Urban Development (Dekhi Government), Additional Secretary in Urban Development Ministry, NDMC Chairperson, Commissioners of South North East, IIT Professor, VK Jindal Mission Director, Manoj Gangeya and other eminent people. On August 6 the SC slammed the Delhi Civic Authorities for having no action plan regarding solid waste management. The landfill sites were overflowing and there an emergency crisis in the National Capital. The court sought details on a pilot project that is for the segregation oh household wastes launched in some areas like the Defence Colony, Green Park, Maharani Bagh.
