The Supreme Court has designated 25 former Chief Justices and judges of High Courts as Senior Advocates. This was held as per the communication issued by Additional Registrar and Secretary of the Committee for Designation of Senior Advocates, Supreme Court judges in a meeting.
The Apex Court earlier issued guidelines to regulate the conferment of the designation of Senior Advocates, in accordance with the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court during the petition by Advocate Indira Jaising.
The guidelines referred to as “Supreme Court Guidelines to Regulate Conferment of Designation of Senior Advocates” empowers a permanent committee (Committee for Designation of Senior Advocates) to deal with all the matters in relation to the conferment. Further, the Secretariat has been tasked to invite applications from retired Chief Justices or Judges of the High Courts and Advocates to seek conferment of the distinction every year. The guidelines have clarified that the cases of retired Chief Justices and judges of High Courts will be sent to the Full Court for consideration in-spite of the fact that there exists an elaborate scrutiny mechanism for advocates before final consideration.
