Earlier this month, a lawyer was arrested by the Delhi Police for sexually harassing a journalist inside the Supreme Court premises. The accused was 32 years old named Pranay Kumar after an FIR was filed against him citing section 354 of the Indian Penal Code. The complainant said that the accused had molested her on two occasions. Once was on July 12, outside the Chief Justice's Court and the other instance was on July 27, inside the premises of Court No. 3. The second time it happened while the court was in session and the first time it happened in the corridor. The complainant said,” Can women be allowed to court and work with dignity as lawyers, journalists and judges or other court staff? Can men in Indian Courts kindly respect a woman and her body?”
It was after the second incident that the complainant approached the Assistant Commissioner of Police, who is stationed at the Apex Court, the Registrar of Security in Supreme Court and the Sexual Harassment Cell in the Supreme Court. She wanted to initiate an action against the accused. The complainant was able to file a written complaint against the accused on July 27 at the Tilak Marg Police Station. The Tilak Marg police station filed the complaint against the accused and charged him under sections 354 of the IPC. The section deals with outraging the modesty of a woman and sexual Harassment. The arrest took place on September 3. This is the second time in less than a month when a second instance of sexual harassment has been reported to have happened in the premises of the Apex court.
