Justice RanjanGogoi will become the next Chief Justice of India. He has come a long way. Straight from Dibrugarh. Infact he is the first person from North East to hold the Chair, the top level of Judiciary. RanjanGogoi was born in 1954 and did his schooling from Don Bosco, Dibrugarh. He then joined the eminent St. Stephens College, under Delhi University to pursue a bachelor degree in History. He is the son of Keshav Chandra Gogoi who has been a former chief minister of the state of Assam. RanjanGogoi got enrolled in the bar in 1978 and practised on Constitutional, Taxation and Company matters in Guwahati High Court. He was appointed as a permanent judge there in 2001.
On September 9, 2010 he was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court and was appointed as the Chief Justice there on February 12, 2011. He was then appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court on April 23, 2012. Gogoi had come in the headlines where he drew the attention of the nation along with three other senior most judges when he remarked, “ Independent judges and noisy journalists are democracy’s first line of defence” Gogoi would assume office from October 3, 2018. He had delivered several important judgments including Assam’s National Register of Citizens, setting up of special courts to try MP and MLAs and many more.
