The Supreme Court issued a slew of directions on Friday directing the treatment and rehabilitation of those suffering from Leprosy and also discriminated against the treatment meted out to the families of the patients to ensure that they are eliminated. The bench issuing the same was being headed by Chief Justice DipakMisra, Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice DY Chandrachud. The petition was that of Mr Pankaj Sinha's that sought to issue directions to the Centre and the State to conduct national surveys of leprosy and disclose the results of the National Survey conducted in 2010-2011. The petition also demanded regular campaigns to spread awareness among the people regarding leprosy to dispel their fears and support and encourage the people affected to live a life of dignity. It prayed that Multi Drug Therapy and other essential drugs for treatment of leprosy be made available in all primary health centres in the country. Educational institutions must also play an equally important role to ensure dignity and equality to the people. Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy had filed a similar petition.
