On Friday, the Delhi HC acquitted former TV anchor and producer SuhaibIlyasi in his wife’s murder case. A bench, comprising of Justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel, allowed the appeal of Ilyasi challenging his conviction and life imprisonment for killing his wife, Anju, 18 years ago. Ilyasi’s daughter Aaliya, who was also present at the time of pronouncement of the verdict, expressed happiness and said she always trusted her father.
Expressing her happiness, she said that they were silently suffering because the judgement was yet to come.
On December 20,2017 the trial court had sentenced Ilyasi, who shot into limelight after hosting TV crime show – ‘India’s Most Wanted’, to life term for the offence of stabbing his wife to death, saying he committed the offence of murder and gave it a colour of suicide.
The HC, which had on April 26 granted interim bail to Ilyasi, refused to extend the relief on May 14.
He later moved to the SC which also refused to grant him interim bail. Ilyasi, in his appeal moved by advocate Rajiv Mohan, claimed that the police did not collect any material for three months after the incident and there was no evidence to charge him for the offence of murder. The police had claimed that he was the one who misled agency, and this proving his involvement in the crime.
It had also imposed a fine of Rs two lakh on him and ordered that Rs 10 lakh be paid to Anju’s parents as compensation. Earlier, Ilyasihas been charged with milder provisions, including 304 B dowry death, of the IPC.
However, Anju’s mother Rukma Singh and sister Rashmi Singh had moved the Delhi HC, which in August 2014 ruled that the former TV producer would be tried for the offence of murder under Section 302 of the IPC.
On January11, 2000 Anju was rushed to a hospital with stab wounds that she allegedly received at her East Delhi residence. She was declared dead on arrival on reaching the hospital.
Ilyasi was arrested on March 28, 2000 and the charges were framed against him in the case, after his sister-in-law and mother-in-law, alleged that he used to torture Anju for dowry.
