On Monday, the outgoing Chief Justice Dipak Misra on his last working day spoke from his heart and whole-heartedly appreciated the gratitude expressed towards him at the bar and the apologies tendered for any unintentional misdemeanors. Delivering the address at his farewell function, the CJI urged for justice to be immunized against any disruption, stating that the truth is not always what it is seems to be and that the truth, in fact, is devoid of any color.
Remarking that the members of the bar should abstain from acting as sour losers in attaching unfounded motives when the outcome of cases are not favorable, he highlighted the tremendous role played by advocates. He also added that if one’s senses of perception are free from any pollution, the picture is conceived simply as it is. He iterated that the Indian judiciary is and has been the strongest and the most robust institution in the world, even in the face of numerous attacks, it hasn’t been robbed of its independence by any skills or tactics.
Reaffirming the ‘supremacy’ of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Misra presented a united front in expressly reposing his faith in the Chief JusticedesignateRanjanGogoi, and said that the independence of the judiciary stands secure in the hands of Justice Gogoi.
While acknowledging the wisdom and the experience of the senior members, he showered appreciation on the newer entrants to the legal profession, regarding them as assets with the potential to significantly advance the jurisprudence and enlightening the bench’s vision.
Adding that he is fully satisfied with his term as the CJI, he signed off on an enigmatic note by saying that if he were to write anautobiography, its motto would be ‘No rhetoric, only hard work’.
Earlier, Justice Gogoi congratulated the outgoing Chief Justice for his exemplary contributions to the law and for his ground-breaking judgments condemning mob violence and honour killings and according recognition to the LGBT spectrum.
Justice Gogoi spoke about the Chief Justice’s learnedness and his resoluteness that would serve as an inspiration to both his academicians and successors. Furthermore, he asserted that in these times of social and political volatility, Constitutional morality should be allowed to be the guiding and the uniting lightFinally, in his capacity as the Chief Justice-designate, Justice Gogoi assured that the justice delivery system has emerged as a winner even in the wake of the incessant attacks on its credibility and that the commitment of the dedicated judges to the Constitutional ideals will not waiver despite any inadequacies.
