On Thursday a PIL was filed in the Supreme Court claiming extension of its Visakha guidelines to prevent sexual harassment at religious places, including ‘ashramas’,’madrasas’and catholic institutions. The apex court on August 13, 1997 in the Visakha case, laid down as many as 12 guidelines to be followed by employers to prevent or deter act of sexual exploitations against women.
The petition filed by advocate Maneesh Pathak stated religious places constitute part of workplace as women are employed there other than those working on voluntary basis. The petitions sought the centre to direct authorities concerned of the particular area and also provide adequate measures for women safety at religious places by conducting periodic checks from state women panels.
The petition mentions issues of social exploitations at religious institutions such as the issue of Kerala priest and other gurus like Daati Maharaj; Asharam Bapu .It explains the considerable framing of policies based on the Visakha guidelines to make women feel safe at religious places.
