Kerala High Court has issued directions to the Government to ensure lift of the police restrictions at the Sabarimala. These restrictions were imposed to check the protestors opposing the entry of women in the age group of 10-50 years into the temple. Further, the directions were issued to allow chanting of ‘saranam’ at the sannidhanam, thereby clarifying that no protests shall be allowed there.
The directions were issued upon the hearing of a group of petitions against the police restrictions at Sabarimala. A three member panel has also been formed by the same bench. The team, comprising of retired justice PR Raman, Justice Sirijagam and IPS Hema Chandran, has been appointed as the monitors of the place.
The Kerala high court division bench of Justice PR Ramachandran and Justice Anil kumar said that the order under section 144 of the CrPC will continue at the temple thereby banning all protests at the shrine. The said section bans the assembly of four or more people considering such a group as unlawful given that they have an unlawful purpose at hand, planned violent protests being one of them.
