The Supreme Court issued a circular on 10th January 2019 gave recommendations to fill 2 out of 5 vacancies in the Apex court. The collegium comprising of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, Justice AK Sikri, Justice SA Bobde, Justice NV Ramana & Justice Arun Mishra recommended to fill up the 2 vacancies.
The collegium recommended Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, CJ of Karnataka High Court, and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of Delhi High Court to be elevated as Judges of the Supreme Court. This collegium was result of the meetings held in first week of January 2019 for such recommendations. As per the collegium issued, such recommendations were made after reviewing with senior Judges of all High Courts who are eligible for elevation to the Supreme Court. The Collegium felt that Justice Maheswari and Justice Khanna are at present more deserving all respects.
The resolution also states that the combined seniority of both the judges based on all-India Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges of High Courts existed. The resolution also discloses thatwhile making the recommendation the collegium had kept in mind the desirability of giving due representation on the Bench of the Supreme Court to all the High Courts.
Justice Dinesh Maheshwari started his Judicial carrier in 2004 where he was first appointed as Judge of the Rajasthan High Court and was later transferred to Allahabad High Court. . In 2016 he was elevated as Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court & was later on transferred to Karnataka High Court & has been functioning there since then.
Whereas, Justice Sanjiv Khanna was appointed as a Judge of Delhi High Court in year 2005. And has been functioning as a judge of the Delhi High Court since then.
