The collegium that recommended Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, CJ of Karnataka High Court, and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of Delhi High Court to be elevated as Judges of the Supreme Court came into force with the elevation of respective Judges to the SC. This collegium was result of the meetings that were held in first week of January 2019 for such recommendations headed by CJ Ranjan Gogoi.
On 16th January 2019, the President of India had notified their appointments. On 18th January Justice Dinesh Maheshwari & Justice Sanjiv Khanna sworn in as Supreme Court Judges. The new count of total number of SC judges is now 28. Swearing ceremony was held at the chamber of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi at around 10.30 AM.
Justice Dinesh Maheshwari was earlier the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court, whereas Justice Khanna was a judge of Delhi High Court.
There had been several statements by former Chief Justices of India expressing their displeasure on decision to elevate Justice Khanna superseding Justice Nandrajog. Mr. Kailash Gambhir former Delhi HC judge wrote letter to the President questioning the decision.
