A Congress party member—Sajjan Kumar along with five others who were involved in the Sikh riots in 1984, which happened after the assassination of Indira Gandhi caused by her two Sikh bodyguards, surrendered before the Karkardooma Court on Monday to serve life imprisonment.
He will be imprisoned in room number 14 of the Mandoli Prisons Complex located near the Karkardooma Court. He is kept away from the Sikh Prisoners due to security concerns. In addition to his surrender, two more former Congress MLAs—Mahender Yadav and KishanKhokar surrendered before the Metropolitan Magistrate Aditi Garg. The officials allowed Sajjan Kumar to have his spectacles and walking stick due to his old age, and the other two leaders are jailed in Tihar.
The Judicial Institution declined the extension request made by Sajjan Kumar before the court. He had sought extension till January 31 to settle his family affairs and property, and for filing an appeal before the Supreme Court against the High Court Verdict. Further, he said about the unavailability of Senior Advocates on account vacation. Subsequently, the counsel of Sajjan Kumar said that the latter would comply with the HC order to save the reputation of the Political Party.
The case against Sajjan Kumar and other former MLAs is related to the murder of five Sikh People in the Raj Nagar Part-I area in Palam Colony in South-west Delhi, and the devastation of Gurudwara in Raj Nagar Part-II.
The High Court set aside the order of the Trial Court which acquitted Sajjan Kumar but upheld to the extent it convicted the other persons involved. The 73-year old convict—Sajjan Kumar has been punished with life imprisonment which implies that he would spend the rest of his life in jail.
Furthermore, the court directed the other convicts—former Congress councillor Balwan Khokhar, retired naval officer Captain Bhagmal, Girdhari Lal and former MLAs Mahender Yadav and KishanKhokkar, to surrender before December 31, 2018.
