Several dignitaries from around the world, including the Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, and the former judge of the Supreme Court, Judge Madan B Lokur attended the swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Asif Saeed Khosa. The ceremony took place at the Aiwan-i-Sadr in Islamabad. The Pakistani newspaper Dawn reported that the notable personalities who were invited included the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Narin Ferdi Sefik, the Chief Judge of Borno State in Nigeria, Kashim Zannah, Justice Lokur's wife Savita Lokur and the former Canada judge and founding president of the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute; Sandra E Oxner and her husband. The news article of Indian Express stated that Judge Lokur also shared a bench with the new Chief Justice and heard three cases for approximately 45 minutes on Friday. Among these, the first question concerned a challenge of a conviction; the second matter related to a bail hearing; and the third, a civil matter, which led to a compromise between the two parties. Starting from the year 2004, both Judge Lokur and Judge Khosa have been sharing a close bond of friendship. According to him, the swearing-in reception in Pakistan is "unprecedented". Being overwhelmed, Justice Lokur appreciated the gesture of calling him to preside with the CJI for hearing three cases. He also recognized the "wonderful" atmosphere at the court in Pakistan, stating that it was not as jam-packed as in India.
During the ceremony, President Arif Alvi made an oath to Justice Khosa, who said that according to the law, he would do well to all kinds of people, without any fear or favour. Justice Khosa received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Punjab and the LLM degree from Queens College, Cambridge, in 1978. At first, he has done his enrollment as an Advocate in 1979 in the Lahore High Court and later he joined the Supreme Court in the year 1985. He was promoted to the position of a judge of the Supreme Court in February 2010. Throughout his long career extending over a period of almost two decades, Judge Khosa has resolved around 55,000 cases. He will stay as Pakistan's Chief Justice for a period of 11 months and is expected to retire on December 21, 2019.
