According to a recent report of The Telegraph, two High Court justices received false calls in the impersonated voice of the Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi. The false and fabricated calls were made in demand of elevation of some lawyers to the position of judges. Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan and Justice L Narayana Swamy, Chief Justices of Telengana and Karnataka High Courts respectively were reported to receive the said fake calls. Justice Swamy first received a call from a person who has not yet been identified, representing himself as the private personal secretary of CJI Gogoi, H K Juneja.
He claimed to make the call on behalf of the CJI who wanted the names of some advocates in the Karnataka High Court to be recommended for the promotion as judges in the high court. Subsequently, after two days, the alleged caller telephoned Justice Swamy and introduced himself as Juneja again and this time stated that CJI Gogoi wanted to talk to him about the proposed recommendations. Later the caller or someone else imitated Judge Gogoi's voice and spoke with Justice Swamy, repeating the request to raise the lawyers' position. The same process was repeated with Justice Radhakrishnan.
The imitation was so convincing that the two judges believed they were talking to CJI Gogoi himself. A preliminary investigation revealed that the calls to the two judges were made from the electronic private branch exchange (EPBX) system of the Supreme Court but it was actually done by cell phone as suggested by the Telegraph report.
The Supreme Court registry ordered a probe and FIR was lodged at the Tilak Marg Police Station. The Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi has reportedly issued an advisory to chief justices of high courts and other judges not to entertain any calls either in his name or that of his office.
