On Friday, the Court of the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate has granted bail to Journalist Priya Ramani in the case of defamation filed against her by the former minister of the Union MJ Akbar.
Akbar had filed a defamation suit against Ramani after she accused him of sexual harassment and misconduct in a series of tweets published in October 2018.
Although several women had levelled accusations of misconduct and harassment against the former Minister, Akbar He chose to file a defamation complaint against Ramani alone.
Senior Advocate Rebecca John appeared for Ramani today. Since defamation is a bailable offence, Ramani was entitled to bail, she argued.
John said that she has to go to Bangalore. As a result, Justice Samar Vishal granted the bail to Ramani on the condition that she should furnish a bail bond and surety of Rs 10,000.
Ramani also moved an application to obtain the personal appearance exemption in the case.
The Court ordered Akbar to file a reply to the question before the next hearing date. In his own testimony before the ACMM, Akbar described Ramani's accusations as "fabricated non-events".
Akbar was represented by Sandeep Kapur, Senior Partner of Karanjawala and Co, assisted by Principal Associate Veer Inder Singh Sandhu, Senior Associates Vivek Suri and Niharika Karanjawala and associates Apoorva Pandey and Gudipati G Kashyap.
