SC Dismissal Of Petition Against Padmavati
A section of society is seeking stay on the release of the movie “Padmavati” which they claim is hurting sentiments of the Rajput community, but the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition filed against it. The plea had alleged that the movie wrongly depicted Rani Padmavati in the movie and distorted and twisted historical facts. While dismissing the petition, the apex court said that the Censor Board has not yet issued certificate to Padmavati. "It is an independent body and therefore SC should not intervene in their jurisdiction," it said.
Meanwhile Bajrang Dal workers on Friday are set to launch a massive protest in Rajasthan. There has been widespread uproar against the movie which is scheduled for release on December 1. The workers have even earlier protested against the movie where they said, “Watching Padmavati trailer one can clearly see altering of the facts of the History have been done”, Rajput groups in Rajasthan have been protesting against the release of the film saying it might dishonour the community.
The top court was hearing the petition filed by Siddharajsinh M Chudasama and 11 others, which also sought setting up of a committee of eminent historians to check the veracity of the script to prevent any inaccuracy in the portrayal of Rani Padmavati.
BJP member Arjun Gupta, who is the General Secretary of the Uttar Bharatiya Morcha, BJP on Friday wrote to Home Minister Rajnath Singh urging that Sanjay Leela Bhansali should be tried for treason for distorting history, “The whole country, not just the Rajput community, is standing against it. He needs to be severely punished by being tried for treason for his attempt to distort history, so that in future any filmmaker is wary of these kind of projects," he said.
Clarifying on the allegations filed by the complainant, Director Bhansali on Thursday released a video and said “The film doesn’t have any scene which would hurt the sentiments of any religious or social group”.
