The income tax department carried out raids on 187 locations that belonged to the relatives of jailed AIADMK leader VK Sasikala in Tamil Nadu. It was one of the biggest raids in the history of the Income Tax department and its shock value didn't just come from the politically affluent people raided, but by the magnitude of the operation. More than 1800 personnel were used by the department to conduct the raid and that too without tipping off anyone.
So how exactly did the I-T department manage to not tip off anyone about the raids? Well, ‘SRINI weds MAHI’ was their ploy. The cars used by the I-T officials had a poster that said ‘Srini weds Mahi’. The poster was used to divert any suspicion over the enormous number of vehicles that were used to travel across the state. Sources have said that a marriage party would be the perfect cover for this kind operation. Around 350 cabs were booked by I-T officials in Chennai alone.
According to sources, a whopping 215 properties and 355 people came under the scanner and it resulted in lot of seizures. According to IT officials these premises were owned by AIADMK leader V. K. Sasikala and her relatives in various parts of Tamil Nadu. Swiss watches and diamonds have been found in cupboards of hostel rooms of women’s college. The hostel of Sengamala Thayaar Educational Trust Women's College, owned by Sasikala's brother V. Dhivaharan at Sundarakottai in Mannargudi, the family's native village.
Officials reported that their suspicion began when 12 protesters stopped them from entering into the collage. They were under the impression that I-T officials will put valuables in the collage so as to frame Dhivaharan. The officials copied several documents from laptops and desktops at Jayaraman's and Priya's residences. She claimed the ornaments belonged to her and that they were kept at Baskar's house because her house at Kolathur on the outskirts of the city was flooded. I-T officials said she could reclaim the valuables if she could produce documents to prove her claim.
The raids began at 6 a.m. on Thursday morning and the residence of M. Natarajan, husband of Sasikala in Thanjavur was also searched. The raid was conducted at many places including the office premises of Jaya TV, Jazz Cinemas, Namadhu MGR, shell companies, offices and residences. The investigations spanned across Thanjavur, Tiruchi, Mannargudi and Chennai.
The raids are continued on Friday as well. “The total amount of value of the cash along with the documents captured by the officials would be known after completing the entire operation,” a source from IT department told IANS.
But I-T officials have now revealed the real extent that the department has gone to as part of its 'Clean black money' operations.
