The Bombay High Court took an unusual step and decided to distribute PIL’s (Public Interest Litigations) in different categories among different division benches. The PIL’s are divided into categories on the basis of issues and distributed to benches accordingly.
The notice of court on November 16 stated that:
“It is noticed that in this High Court, the Public Interest Litigations are pending since years together and are piling up. This is against the aim and object of filing Public Interest Litigation to seek immediate remedies on the issues of general public importance. In order to achieve the object of speedy disposal of the PILs, it is found necessary to distribute the Public Interest Litigations amongst various Benches so that they would be disposed of in a reasonable period”
The PIL’s filed on particular issues such as PIL related to rights of children and women or any offence against them, was done by the special bench of women Justice Mridula Bhatkar and Justice Revati Mohite Dere.
It is found that the most no of PIL’s are filed on the issue of illegal construction and encroachment on government land. Chief Manjula Chellur will be hearing PIL on this issue.
PIL’s are categorised on to 20 varieties, comprising 95 subjects and all of them are distributed among eight separate division benches.
