In one of the most controversial cases of this year, the Bombay High Court granted partial custody of Ankita Khandelwal, Hema Ahuja and Bhakti Mehare. These three individuals were accused of abetting the suicide of Payal Tadvi, a 26-year-old second-year MD student at Mumbai's TN Topivala National Medical College. The Hon’ble Court had refused to grant full custody to the Crime Branch. These three women were a year senior to the deceased. The Counsel for the respondents stated that there had posed no objection to be taken out of the Byculla Jail between 2 pm till 6 pm for interrogation along with the fact that Investigating Officer and his team could take them out from 9 am till 6 pm for three days for interrogation. However, they were to be brought back to the prison by 6pm.
In furtherance of the order of the Court, the three doctors in custody will be interrogated by the Crime Branch.The case was transferred to the Crime Branch from the Agripada police station on May 30. It has been said that the victim, Payal belonged to the Tadvi Bhil Muslim community, a Scheduled Tribe and was tormented by the accused repeatedly, which led her to commit suicide by hanging herself in her room on 22nd May.
