A petition was filed by Raosaheb, alias Narsappa Annappa Alase and Rajendra Shivgonda Patil, residents of Kohlapur, before the Bombay High Court. The petition is against the Government officials, public servants and other responsible persons for dereliction of duties in the flood and waterlogging incident in Sangli and Kohlapur districts. The petition requests the Bombay High Court to set up an expert enquiry committee to look into the matter.
Petitioners allege that the Maharashtra government did not abide by the guidelines for Preparing Operation and Maintanence Manual for Dams issued by the Central Water Commission (CWC). Also, the petitioners contend that the state authorities did not take appropriate measures and released excess water from the dam located in Karnataka, which ultimately caused flooding in the districts of Sangli and Kohlapur. The rivers that caused such flooding and into which excess warer was allegedly passed were those of Krishna and Panchganaga. It is further alleged that the rescue operations that were conducted were also delayed.
In another episode, Nana Patole, an Ex- Member of Parliament and Mumbai based social activist Dr. Sanjay Lakhe Patil requested the Bombay High Court to declare the recent Maharashtra floods as man made disaster. In a letter addressed to the Cheif Justice of Bombay High Court, Pradeep Nandrajog, Nana Patole asked that an expert committee be set up to investigate and assign responsibility of inaction. They also requested that the court take the decision for the same under the Disaster Management Act 2005, and also sought that the expert committee suggest preventive measures to be taken, so that these disasters can be prevented in the future.
