A new Circular issued by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) directs all toll operators to train their staff to pay respect to armed forces personnel.
It is believed that the circular was issued after NHAI received many complaints from the armed forces about harsh behaviour from the toll employees.
According to rules, personnel of armed forces are exempt from toll while on duty.
The highways authority said that the verification of ID cards of armed forces personnel has to be done by senior (competent) authority and should not be left to the untrained lower staff. The circular further says, "It is needless to emphasise that considering the extreme sacrifice of armed forces to the nation, in case of doubt with respect to nature of their official duty, benefit of doubt should be given appropriately to armed forces personnel"
However this is not the first circular issued by NHAI directing the toll operators. In February 2016 another such circular was issued which had a list of instructions, including a dress code for the operators. The operators were also directed to display toll charges prominently and to engage personnel after training basic etiquette to deal with commuters. However, these guidelines are hardly followed, particularly prominent display of toll charges.
