There was a time in India where there existed class based discrimination in the Hindu society. There were mainly four classes namely Brahmans, Kshatriya, Vaishnavs and Shudras. Shudras were subjected to grave discrimination and ill-treatment by the other classes. Keeping all these things in mind, the drafting committee of the Constitution decided to make certain provisions for the upliftment of the backward classes of the country. The idea of Indian Constitution is based on the principles of equality and Justice to all citizens and hence it was of utmost importance for the Constitution makers to provide for such laws that help in preventing such kind of inhumane treatment to the backward classes who are called as untouchables in the ancient India.
Even after 72 years of Independence, India and it's people have not got rid of this issue. Recently, a joint petition was filed in the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India by the mothers of Rohith Vemula and Payal Tadvi for a direction to University Grants Commission (UGC) to take steps against rampant caste discrimination at Universities and Higher Educational Institutions. The Hon'ble bench of the Supreme Court of India has issued notice to the government and the UGC on the petition.
Rohith Vemula, a PhD scholar at Hyderabad Central University and Payal Tadvi, a student of T.N. Topiwala National Medical College committed suicide after alleged caste based discrimination faced by them in their respective educational institutions by their peers. The petition said that it was a violation of the fundamental rights of a person as such incidents were against right to equality, right against discrimination, right to life and right to equal opportunity. It further asked for certain directions including the revival of Equal Opportunity Cells for dealing with internal anti-discrimination matters and include in it people from Schedule castes and schedule tribes, social activist and members from a non-profit organization to ensure transparency and accountability. The petition also urged the university authorities to undertake programmes to sensitize children on such issues. Also, caste based discrimination complaints by students and staff must be dealth with strictness.
In recent times, there have been many incidents on caste based issues which do not reflect a growing and advanced society. If India truly needs to grow, it first needs to change the mindset of the people. Such minor issues will not take us further rather would make India a stagnant society.
