Since the Act was passed people and the certain state government had started opposing the Act as the fines imposed after the amendment was fixed at very high amounts. Gujarat became the first state to introduce a reduction in the penalties by up to 90% of what was mentioned in the Act. For example, the fine for triple riding on a two-wheeler was fixed at Rs. 1000 and the Gujarat government fixed it at Rs. 100 and obstructing an emergency vehicle was to be fined Rs. 10000 and that fixed by the Gujarat government was Rs. 1000.
The reduction in the penalties was introduced in order to make the common people be able to pay the fines as mentioned under the Act was unaffordable for the people.
Following Gujarat’s slashing the penalties under the Act Karnataka has also cut down on the penalties in public interest. The Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said Karnataka will also follow the same thing.
The fine for driving at excessive speed has been reduced from Rs. 2000 to Rs. 1000 for two-wheeler three0wheelers and Light Motor Vehicle and for others it has been reduced from Rs 4000 to Rs. 2000.
Violation of safety measures for motorcycle and pillion riders will not attract a fine of Rs. 500 instead of Rs. 1000. For driving without helmet and seat belts people will have to pay Rs. 500 instead of Rs. 1000.
Violating exceeding weight limit will attract a fine of Rs. 5000 with Rs. 2000 fo every additional ton plus the charges for offloading the same weight. The original fine under the Act is Rs. 20000 with Rs. 2000 for every additional ton.
For driving vehicles without permit the penalty has been reduced from Rs. 10000 to Rs. 5000 for the first instance and for the second instance it is same as given in the Act.
