Several people from the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) have started protests in various spots in Delhi. The protest is against the amended Motor Vehicle Act and the main demand of the protestors is that they want a reduction in the hefty fines imposed under the Act.
The barricades that were put in order to control the protestors were also removed and a scooter was thrown at the same in huge protest outside Nitin Gadkari’s official residence.
When the members of IYC were being talked to about it, they said that the government is finding ways to penalize the common people and at the same time running away from its responsibility of providing and maintaining good infrastructure. Directing at the amended Motor Vehicle Act, they said through the penalties imposed under the Act, the government is trying to ‘murder India’s democracy’ system.
It has been noted that the vehicle number of the traffic violators are uploaded on the website (challan portal). Now since the portal can be accessed openly by anyone, it is violating their privacy rights.
The amended Act has increased the penalties from what it was earlier. The fine for driving an uninsured vehicle has been increased from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 2,000 for the first time and for the second time it has been Rs. 4,000.The protests are being made at various spots in Delhi including the Union Road Highways and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari’s house and also outside the Transport Ministry and other areas including the inner circle of Connaught Place.
Some of the female proctors have said that it is dangerous for them as anyone could get their personal details through that portal. Also demanding a reduction in the challan amount, they said that someone who barely earns Rs. 4000- Rs. 5000 cannot certainly pay a fine of Rs. 10,000.Therefore the fines need to be reduced and the vehicle number of the traffic violator shall be stopped from getting uploaded on the challan portal.
