The penalties imposed under the new Motor Vehicles Act are acting as a deterrent for the people who do not follow traffic rules. Though not welcomed by the people and the country, the Act is serving the basic motive of the Central Government to amend the MV Act by imposing such heavy fines.
The number of people using the Delhi metro in the last 10 days has been recorded to be 34,190,000 while the number stood at 33,100,000 for the month of August. There has also been an increase in the number of people using the buses of Delhi Transport Corporation by 10, 90,000.
Due to the passing of the new and amended Motor Vehicles Act in July, the common people have become even more careful on the road. It is also aiding in creating awareness among people all over the country to follow and respect the traffic rules. This will in turn help to reduce the number of road accidents.
All those people who do not possess the Registration Certificate (RC) or the Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate or other documents are opting to travel by public transport in order to avoid liability under the Act. According to sources, the number of passengers in Delhi metro and buses has seen an increase of 3.3% and 4.8% respectively.
There are recent incidents of people being fined heavily since the Act came into force. A truck driver in Delhi was fined Rs. 2 lakh for overloading and other violations under the Act on Friday i.e. 13/9/2019. A Nagaland truck has been fined Rs. 6 lakh in Odisha’s Sambalpur reportedly. Seeing all the strictness with which the Act is being implemented in certain areas of the country, people have become careful.
However, there are some BJP ruled states who have found that it will be in the interest of the general public to cut down the penalties given in the Act. First in the list is Gujarat. Reports say that Karnataka has also decided to slash the penalties following Gujarat.
