The hefty penalties imposed on some people recently, like the Delhi resident who was fined Rs. 23,000, a Delhi truck driver who was fined Rs. 2 Lakh are flooding the headlines. But nobody is seeing the other side, the reason why they were fined. Nobody is considering the traffic violations these people have made. Driving a vehicle without a helmet, a seatbelt, without the documents will attract heavy fines as these are meant ultimately for the safety of the people on road.
According to a survey, India accounts for 2% of the world’s total number of motor vehicles and unfortunately accounts for 12% of the world’s total traffic-related incidents alone. 87% of the people meeting with accidents every day are between the age gaps of 18 to 60 years and 72% of the people between 18 to 45 years. The total number of people losing their lives due to road fatalities amount to 3% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In the year 2017, India had witnessed 1, 50,000 people losing their lives due to road accidents. A similar trend was surveyed for the years 2018 and 2019.
The most common vehicle seen on the roads is two-wheeler as it is easy to ride and is affordable to purchase. It is however interesting to note that the highest number of accidents recorded every day is of the people riding two-wheelers. In the year 2017, 33.9% of the road accidents and 29.8% of road fatalities were recorded with two-wheelers.
Thus if the states keep slashing the penalties under the Act one by one, the people will not take the rules seriously. While we can see that in the states where the Act has been implemented strictly, the people have started respecting and following the traffic rules properly which will, in turn, help the people in avoiding road accidents. Therefore, it is important for people to understand that the rules have been made for the betterment and safety of the people and not as a means to collect revenue.
