A massive campaign against the felling of trees due to the elevated road project , more than 600 trees ere transplanted and now all of them are dead , the reason being the termed callous attitude of the forest department and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) . This issue has become a major concern since last year after a non- governmental organisation moved to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding to pass an order to stop the cutting of tress in the matter of construction work for the Ferozepur Road Smarak Chowk and to save the green cover. It was first decided by the NHAI to relocate and transplant around 2,000 tress by the number went down by 1,122 due to the reason being the transplantation costs Rs. 35, 000 per tree and then a fresh plan was made to only transplant 675 tress and the cost of Rs. 10,000 per tree as revealed by the sources of the department( NHAI). The tress were uprooted from Ferozepur and transplanted to a area near Amaltas village in December this year. A statement issued by the officials of the forest department that denied any kind of involvement in the process while on the other hand the NHAI said that they have nothing to do with the maintenance or cutting of the trees.
“Our department was neither involved in the transplantation process nor responsible to look after the trees,” divisional forest officer (DFO) Charanjit Singh said. “However, we had even written a letter to the NHAI in January this year stating that three trees required profuse watering,” he claimed. Project director appointed by the NHAI to supervise the construction work, Bhupinder Singh, maintained that the highways authority and construction company had nothing to do with it. The Activists of the Ludhiana cares were not fortunate enough as the Aarey Activists as the Cutting of trees in the Aarey has become a national issue and topic for debate but the said case , the officials responsible ( NHAI and the Forest Department) are dodging and passing the blame game to each other that ultimately resulted in the death of the tress.
