Goa Forward Party(GFP) on Thursday said that the Chief Minister Parmod Sawant should resign due to his failure to prevent a grant on environmental approval to Karnataka for the Rs. 840.5 crore kalasa Bhandura diversion water project, the party president also said that the GFP( Goa Forward Party) will challenge the decision before the National Green Tribunal( NGT) and will also a launch a state wise opposition agitation towards the centre's decision. Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said on Wednesday that Karnataka had been granted the permission for the Kalasa Banduri drinking water project.
Sawant had, however, said that his government was not aware of the clearance granted for the project. "Mhadei river is like mother to us. We shall protect it at any cost. Officially Government of Goa is not aware of any permission having been granted to Karnataka affecting Mhadei river," the Chief Minister said, that gave rise to flak by opposition parties and environmentalists in Goa as they slammed the Centre and the BJP-led government for failing to protect the state's interest. Sardesai same, "I demand the CM's resignation, his intelligence failure to understand that Karnataka had applied for the global organization in April 2019.The state Government was fully unaware of the development."
On Sawant's remarks that the clearance cannot be granted without hearing Goa, Sardesai said that if the CM was not consulted, then he was not worth leading the state any more. "He (CM) should resign on moral grounds," he said. Sardesai also said that his party would challenge the permission granted to the project before the National Green Tribunal (NGT). While the other perspective of the subject matter that Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra have conflicting interests on the issue of sharing water from the Mhadei river basin. While the river originates in Karnataka, a major part of the river flows in Goa after briefly coursing from Maharashtra.
