The Supreme Court of India prohibited the sale and purchase of crackers last year on October, 2018 to lessen the Air Pollution Levels especially in the National Capital Region of the country and a two hour window restriction in the Delhi City, as Delhi being the centre of burning the crackers every Diwali and the result being that the city wakes up in haze in the morning with the dust and pollution. This year the authorities came up with a new concept that is green fire crackers that is said to cause 30% less pollution that the normal crackers, but the subject matter of the reality is little different being the short supply in the markets and only having less than 30 manufacturers in the country for the production of these green crackers who have the license, "The market has only two types of green crackers to offer them to their customers that are flowerpots and sparklers, these crackers are only produced in two regions mainly in National Capital Region and some regions of Madhya Pradesh", said a fireworks trader in Chandani Chowk Area. The worst part being that only 30 manufacturers have the license for the production. The Supreme Court had banned conventional firecrackers in 2018 and had allowed only green firecrackers, which cause 30% less pollution. A total of 97 such shopkeepers had applied for temporary licence. While only 11 got it till last week, others were not granted licences because they had not got fire certificates.
The Delhi Police’s licencing department issue 14 licences for five years to those shopkeepers who store or sell less than 600 kilograms of firecrackers. Some temporary licences are also issued for a fixed period of 25 days by district DCPs, “We have asked our staff to check illegal sale of both conventional as well as green crackers. All boxes having green crackers have a specific hologram. We have briefed our staff to find that hologram on firecracker boxes to ascertain if they are green or banned crackers,” said DCP (southwest) Devender Arya. The ban on the crackers in only one part of the issue while the selling of illegal firecrackers has now became a common practice in the NCR regions, few people concerned about the pollution levels this definitely will take a long run for the authorities to ensure the air quality and the pollution levels for pollution free and a healthy environment that seems far more imaginable in this current scenario.
