Jacob Zuma, who is the former President of South Africa, is reported to appeal before the court that he will face trial in the case in which he is accused of corruption. In this matter, his counsel, Thabani Masuku is attempting to delay the case. The case can be traced back to 1990 when he was charged for bribing in an arms deal. This would be the first time he will face the trial though the charges have been pending over him during a long period of time. His appeal followed from the rejection to drop the bribery, racketeering and fraud charges against him by the High Court in Pietermaritzburg. The case has been going on for more than a decade until now.
The cases against him are for bribery of 4 million rands prior to him being elevated to the post of President. In addition to that, he is also accused of fifty-one billion rands for purchasing arms in the 1990s through five European Companies. The Companies also similarly face the charges. However, they have denied the charges against them. It is alleged that Zuma has allegedly purchased military arms and ammunitions, fighter jets, boats.
It is important to note that he was impeached from his position as the President by the African National Congress (ANC) after there were alleged charges against him for being involved in bribery and corruption after his political career for nine years and his increasing notoriety amongst the masses. Zuma’s financial advisor facilitated him in this illegal act and he has already been sentenced for fifteen years and is currently serving the jail term. However, he was released on parole, immediately after Zuma was appointed as the President in 2009 on the grounds of a medical emergency. Currently, the former President is facing sixteen charges relating to corruption and bribery.
