The Supreme Court bench of judges Rohinton Fali Nariman and Navin Sinha, on Friday, penalized a NGO Rs.1 lakh on for filing a PIL seeking directions to the central government for prohibition of liquor in the nation, under Article 47 of the Constitution. The NGO from Vishakhapatnam, Chaitanya Sravanthi, is working in the area of women empowerment in slums. The NGO claimed that it conducted a survey with the help of Andhra University on liquor utilization in slums of Vishakhapatnam, which gave disturbing outcomes on the basis of which the present petition is filed.
Referring to a report of the National Institute of Mental Health in 2016, the NGO presented that it discloses relationship between mental issues and utilization of liquor. Increasing liquor utilization results in increment of brutal incidences and sicknesses. It sought an audit on manufacture, distribution and supply, and consumption of different types of alcohols. It also demanded that the Union of India and respondents should be directed to to set up an a plan with regard to raising awareness on sick impacts of utilization of liquor, making stringent move on providers of liquor, by reinforcing the examination instrument, seizure and appropriation of liquor.
Terming the petition an abuse of the legal procedure, the seat coordinated inconvenience of the cost of Rs.1 lakh to be deposited by the petitoner, with the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee within a month.
