Recently, the Supreme Court held that the execution of a convict in a death sentence by hanging is more feasible as compared to the usage of lethal injection. This observation was made after hearing the arguments of the Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand who was representing the Centre, based on a plea which was filed by a Supreme Court advocate Mr Rishi Malhotra who was against executing a convict in the death row by hanging. He suggested that some alternative measures like lethal injection or shooting should be implemented. Chief Justice Dipak Misra had asked the Centre to file a meticulous affidavit pertaining to the issue and to clarify the stand of the Centre. The Chief Justice had also asked to consider the various methods of execution of a convict in the death row in different countries and subsequently, the Court requested the parliament to change of mode of execution from hanging to some other punishment by bringing in the requisite amendments. The procedure pertaining to execution can be replaced with intravenous lethal injection, shooting, electrocution or gas chamber where, after an enormous amount comparison it was identified that the above-mentioned procedures will take a lesser amount of time when compared to hanging by the neck, as the entire process would take over 40 minutes.
