Nirbhaya case
At about 8:30 p.m. on December 16th 2012, Jyoti Singh, a physiotherapy intern was brutally gang raped by 6 men in Delhi. After brutally raping the victim, she was dumped on the road and left for dead. She was so severely attacked that her insides were spilling out when she was taken to the hospital. She died two weeks after the attack in a Singapore hospital. But her soul rested in peace on 20th march 2020 when the convicts were hanged in Tihar jail, Delhi at 5:30 am. This case shook the entire nation and serves as a landmark.
All the 6 men including the juvenile were convicted by the court. Out of them one had committed suicide in jail and the juvenile was tried separately in a juvenile court and was awarded three-years in a special home. And the remaining four convicts were to be hanged to death. On January 7 the court issued death warrants for the first time, for execution on January 22.On January 17, the date was postponed, and one of the convict’s mercy plea was rejected on that day. And a fresh death warrant was issued. The new date set for the execution was February 1, 6 a.m.Again on February 17, fresh death warrants were issued to hang the four convicts on March 3 at 6 a.m.Finally on March 5, The Delhi court issued fresh death warrant in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case for the execution of death sentences by hanging by the neck of four convicts on March 20 at 6 a.m.
Many attempts were made by the convicts by way of issuing mercy plea, review petitions, second mercy petition to the President, Ram Nath kovind and so on till they exhausted all their remedies. All these efforts went into vain.On 19th March, late night the Delhi HC Division bench assembled at the residence of Justice Manmohan to hear the challenge of the convicts against the trial court’s refusal to stay execution. But the petition was dismissed. Finally on 20th march all the four convicts were hanged at 5:30 a.m. in Tihar jail and finally the long struggle came to an end. Its been rightly said thereby that, “justice delayed is not always justice denied.”
