The Indian Government, in the past couple of days has been seeking aid and yeasting some of the large tech companies in India to get them to work on rapid iterations of healthcare products to see if they can be rolled out in India in double-quick time. While the Government does its duty, the role of corporations on the other hand becomes very crucial. Over the past 48 hours, the biggest companies in India including Tata Trusts, Mahindra and Mahindra, Kotak groups and several other companies have come out with substantial donations and are willing to utilize their ideal capacities in the battle against Coronavirus.
Subir Chaudhary, the CEO of JCB India who specialize in heavy equipment stated that they are capable of manufacturing ventilators by gearing up the manufacturing capacity to achieve that. In an interview, he stated “our entire focus right now is getting to a scalable foot weight to manufacture various aspects and of course, the most critical out of them is the ventilators.” He further stated that they have been working with advanced agencies such as IIT Kanpur and will be able to roll out the first set of ventilators within the next week for testing which will be ready for hospitals in the coming 2 weeks or so.
Talking about ventilators, there are 4 important stages that are to be looked at- firstly, defining the appropriate technology, specifically for the Indian market to produce in large scale. Secondly, focusing on the quality of the ventilators, given the fact that lives are at stake. Thirdly, managing the supply chain such as sensors, valves, motors to scale up production and lastly, connecting all the dots together through medical experts and tests.
Chandrajit Banerjee, the Director General of CII stated that they have connected with existing manufacturers of ventilators, masks, sanitisers and PPEs with and their entire supply chain. This led to an understanding that their capacity of manufacturing these products with high quality standards are limited to a great extent and that there is a need to exponentially augment their inventory to millions of pieces, expeditiously. In furtherance of this, the CII reached out to its largest member companies to understand whether the manufacturing facilities that are ideal due to the lockdown can be gainfully utilized manufacture the required health care products.
As India moves into a critical phase while expecting significant challenges ahead, the industrial sectors are required to work relentlessly with multiple layers- the Government, the Confederation of India Industry and within the industry, with the aid of medical experts.
