The Government of NCT Delhi released an order directing stringent penal actions against landlords forcing doctors, paramedics and healthcare personnel to vacate their rented residence amid the COVID-19 outbreak.
The order by the Health and Family Welfare Department was passed due to several complaints from doctors and healthcare personnel across Delhi claiming harassment and eviction from their temporary residences. This resulted in passing of a strict action by the Delhi Government.
Delhi Government also stated that such an action would result in obstructing and causing hinderance for the public servant to discharge his duties.
The order also states : “all the District Magistrates/Zonal Deputy Commissioners of Municipal Corporation/District Deputy Commissioners of Police are directed to take strict action against such landlords/house-owners under the relevant provisions of law and submit an Action Taken Report on a daily basis to the office of Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Delhi.”
After the outbreak of COVID-19 many doctors raised this concern of being harassed by their landlords. In light od these complaints, the Resident Doctors’ Association, AIIMS, Delhi wrote a letter to the Union Home Minister voicing out their concern.
The letter sent by the association stated “ Many doctors are now stranded on the roads with all their luggage and nowhere to go, across the country. We condemn such attitude and hereby, request you to release an order, as soon as possible, prohibiting the landlords/owners to evict the tirelessly working doctors and other Healthcare Professionals from their rented houses. This would ensure our selfless services to our country in crucial time of COVID-19 pandemic.”
Following the letter the Home Minister, Amit Shah spoke to Delhi Police and directed them to take stringent actions against the landlords who by no means are harassing the doctors.
The doctors also used the social media platform to voice out their concern regarding the harassment and coercion by the landowners or landlords. They also stated that the landlords are taking such steps due to the apprehension, fear an susceptibility to the coronavirus infection.
