The outbreak of the deadly coronavirus, not only poses a threat to the health of the society but has also adversely impacted many economically. With a nationwide lockdown, businesses and government institutions have been shut affecting a lot of individuals who rely on income-based on day to day activities. Among those affected are a lot of advocates who cannot practice because of the countrywide closure of courts and restricting the hearings to only essential and urgent matters. In response to the above closure, the Advocates Association of Bangalore (“AAB”), sought relief for junior advocates, in a letter directed to the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
The letter emphasized the role that advocates play in the maintenance of social order in the society and their relentless efforts to safeguard the interests of the society without any permanent income. With the closure of courts, many state advocates have been left with no earning making it difficult for them to lead their lives.
The president of AAB, AP Ranganatha also, in his letter, points out to the financial package for farmers, women, and labor of the unorganized sector, announced by the Finance Minister, on March 26, 2020, and asks for a package of similar nature for advocates. He further urged other State Bar Councils and the Bar Council of India (BCI) to utilize the welfare fund amount to help the young members of the legal community in these difficult times.
In a similar statement, Chalakani Venkat Yadav, a member of the Telangana Bar Council said that the closure of trial courts and other legal institutions will push at least five thousand junior lawyers towards starvation. He said that the state government along with its efforts to reach out to the poor giving them financial assistance and using public distribution systems for distributing rice should also consider opening grocery stores in all courts, exclusively for lawyers, by utilizing the space used for selling fee stamps till now.
