Recently, The Supreme Court held that the petition filed by 'National Lawyers Campaign for Judicial Transparency and Reforms' would be heard for seeking review of the "Judgment dated on October 2015 that quashed NJAC". Advocate Mathew Nedumpara who represented the NJAC contented before the bench consisting of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A M Khanwilkar and Justice S Y Chandrachud seeking a review of the collegium system which is a complete dismantlement of appointment of Judges to the Supreme Court and High Courts. The advocate also contented that two other petitions were filed for seeking a direction to fill up the vacancies of the SC and HC Judges and also the videography of the proceeding of the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court rejected the National Judicial Appointments Act (NJAC) and also the 99th Constitutional amendment which had given powers to the politicians and the civil society a final say in the appointment of the Judges. The petition filed for seeking review by the National Lawyers Campaign for Judicial Transparency and Reforms was based on a Judgment in Supreme Court "Advocates-on-Record Association v Union of India and others" where the NJAC Act, 2016 was struck down and the collegium system for appointment and elevation of HC and SC Judges were upheld.
