Recently, The Supreme Court asked to the Environment Ministry about the confinement of the efforts taken for improving the air quality only to Delhi and National Capital Region and not for the other polluted cities like Raipur and Patna. The Bench consisting of Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta said that the issue pertaining to improving the air quality should be done on a nationwide basis and special attention shouldn't be given to Delhi as there are other cities too which are more polluted and no action has been taken. The direction was passed when the bench was hearing a Public Interest Litigation which was filed by environmentalist M C Mehta based on the issue of air pollution in the Delhi-NCR.
The Government informed the court that a high-level task force has been appointed comprising of senior officials which are of the rank of Cabinet Secretaries to look into inti the matter. The Additional Solicitor General ANS Nadkarni representing the Ministry of Environment and Forests informed the Bench that in order to ensure fulfilment of the orders which has been passed, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has been notified with the issuance of appropriate directions as per the Environment Protection Act, 1986. The matter would come up for hearing again on 5th February 2018.
