Recently, the Delhi High Court was hearing a petition filed by three advocates i.e., Rohit Dandriyal, Rahul Kumar, Kumar Vivek, and Amritanshu Barthwal, one Company Secretary Rahul Kumar, and NGO All India Confederation of Blind. The Delhi HC directed the RBI and the Centre to examine the issue pertaining to the difficulties faced by the visually impaired people on identifying the new currency of Rs. 200 and Rs. 50 denominations. The Bench consisting of Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C. Hari Shankar held that this issue should be resolved among the petitioners, Government, and RBI itself.
The Petitions submitted stated about that the introduction of a special feature in Intaglio by RBI in the new notes which said that it would help the visually impaired people to easily identify the new denominations. However, it was proved that the new denominations introduced by RBI do not contain any such feature of identification sign. This action of RBI violates the fundamental right of Article 14 of the Constitution of India. At the time of the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain was asked to explain the reason as to why such an issue has been brought to light and why haven't the authorities consulted some of the visually impaired experts before changing the size of the notes. The ASG had claimed that the introduction and the sizes of the new currency have been designed with all the aspects keeping in mind. The Court held the Centre to bring out its viewpoints on the next hearing to be held on 16th February 2018.
