Karnataka lawyers go on hunger strike
The lawyers of Karnataka High Court have begun their eight day long hunger strike against the delay in the appointment of judges. The total number of judges should be 62 but there are only 24 appointed judges in the High Court, which is the least in all the states of the country, as claimed by the advocates. Also, four judges are going to retire this year, which will further bring down the number to twenty. Out of the 39 court halls of the principle bench of the HC, only 13 are functional at present.
The advocates are led by former Advocates Generals of the state BV Acharya, Ravivarma Kumar, Udaya Holla and Ashok Haranahalli. Advocates’ Association Bengaluru president AP Rangatha, Bar Council of India’s co-chairman YR Sadashiva Reddy are also participating in the strike. Their demand is immediate appointment of the judges as their clients have to wait for years to get even a single hearing, thus resulting in decreasing faith of people in the judiciary.
CM Siddaramaiah, law minister TB Jayachandra met the protesting advocates and have promised to take this matter to PM Modi. They say that the Union government is adopting a step motherly attitude in appointing judges to Karnataka High Court.
If the demands of the advocates are not met, they may abstain from all court related works for the upcoming days.
