After Madhya Pradesh, the state of Karnataka is also considering, with real seriousness, the punishment of death for child rapists who are below 12 years of age. The Karnataka Home Minister, Ramalinga Reddy have said that there have been an increase in the number of cases reported under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). These reported cases includes offences from molestation to rape and therefore the government is considering the punishment of death penalty for child rapists as the stringent punishment can bring in a decrease in these type of offences. With the example of the state of Madhya Pradesh to look up to, Mr Reddy also said that as soon as the legislation was passed he had procured a copy of the Act for analysis and guidance. A copy of the bill was also sent to the law department of the state of Karnataka for its opinion on whether or not it is possible for the state of Karnataka to bring home such a legislation. Not just this, the Home Minister also informed that a Committee had been set up by the state in the leadership of MLC V S Ugrappa to submit a report in the matter concerning the safety of women and children in the state. The Committee has already submitted its interim report and now, after the term of the committee has been extended, it is preparing its final report and other stringent punishments for child rapists are also looked into by this committee.
