The apex court on Wednesday asked the Mamata Banerjee’s government that what is the issue in having a single identity for everyone in the nation? when we all are Indians.
The Constitution bench comprising of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A K Sikri, Justice A M Khanwilkar, Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Ashok Bhushan while dealing with the contentions raised by the west Bengal’s government on the constitutional validity of the aadhar scheme and the enabling act of 2016 questioned senior advocate Kapil Sibal, the council of the petitioner about his views on the on “having one identity in one nation”, in reply of which he said that showing nationalism is nowhere linked with the scheme of aadhar and being Indian is more than our aadhars.
He contended that the scheme was not valid with respect to alternatives, as the scheme made the Aadhar the one and only source of authentication and the same is required in every place for example banks only asks for aadhar these days for identification which can lead to a big problem in case the information got hacked. Where Justice Chandrachud said that “you need to take extra care for protecting such information”, in reply of which Mr. Sibal said in today’s digital era no data is fully safe from any kind of hacking activities and then in digital world the world will know more about you than yourself.
Justice Sikri also mentioned the instance where his previous bills of last 5 months were presented before him.
The hearing remained inconclusive and will continue on Thursday.
