Tushar Mehta, the new additional solicitor general has been directed by the government to file an appeal against the acquittal of the accused in the 2G case. On December 21, 2017, the trial court acquitted all the accused persons. The list of accused included Kanimozhi (Member of Parliament hailing from DMK) and former telecom minister, Mr. A Raja. The government through its orders clarified that Mr. Mehta will deal with appeal, revision, or any other proceedings transpiring out of the 2G spectrum scam. The scam was investigated by the CENTRAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION. Mr. Mehta would be the fourth special public prosecutor for CBI. The last SPP for CBI was senior counsel Anand Grover. This scam has been a major reason, why the UPA government lost the last Lok Sabha elections. As per the report of last comptroller and auditor general Mr. Vinod Rai, the swindle has caused a loss of 1.76 lakh crore to the nation, as it alleged that Mr. A. Raja sold the telecom and spectrum license to private companies at a truncated price. CBI spokesperson, Abhishek Dayal, highlighted the agency’s stand, “We said on the day of the judgement itself that we will appeal in the higher courts. And a call will be taken soon,"
