The Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on 29th May, 2020 said that “physical and digital hearings have to go together”. He made this statement while speaking at the NR Madhava Menon Memorial Lecture Series which was organized by Akhil Bhartiya Adhivakta Parishad, the theme of which was ‘Legal and Digital challenges for India Post COVID’
He gave the above statement while stating that he was not in favor of completely doing away with physical court hearings during the pandemic. He said, “Digital must supplement the physical and physical must compliment the digital. Yes, there are issues of security and privacy of data. We will take care of that. We will come with a robust data privacy law”.
Mr. Prasad also said that the lawyers need to start preparing for this and that they need to meet this new situation with open arms and should be open to the development of new ideas and technology in India and also be prepared for the era of Artificial Intelligence which is to come. He also urged the lawyers to make use of the digital advances in the legal profession like e-filing and e-arguing.
The Lecture was moderated by Advocate Bansuri Swaraj and Justice (retd.) G Raghuram, Director of the National Judicial Academy was amongst the panelists and shared his views on the theme.
The Law Minister also said while referring to the lawyers that he sympathizes with the lawyers but for the safety of the lawyers, the lockdown is necessary.
While referring to the present pandemic he said that, “Post-COVID world is going to be a different world. I am quite sure that India’s moment has arrived…Maybe post-COVID, there will be a new approach to life.”
While talking about Prof Menon and his ideology, the Union Minister said that courts should not interfere in matters of faith.
Apart from the Union Minister, Justice (Retd.) Raghuram spoke about the usage f technology in the legal profession and how in the post-COVID world the technology is going to bring accountability, transparency and access in the Judiciary.
