The administrative council for Jammu & Kashmir, which met on Thursday under the chairmanship of lieutenant governor GC Murmu, he agreed for the sanction to the expansion of coverage of the assimilated social security scheme (ISSS) to transgender community, who will from this time forth will be getting Rs 1,000 each for every month as per this scheme.
Till now ISSS has extended a monthly monetary support of Rs 1,000 to the senior citizens, orthopedically challenged people, orphans, destitute and widows, who either have a scanty source of income or zero source of livelihood.
Before this the transgender community was seen not qualifying for fiscal benefits as per the social security scheme.
“With the addition of the transgender community in the scheme, about 2,000 imminent pension cases connected to the community shall be determined,” according to an official spokesman.
The department for social welfare will be coming up with a fresh application form for the transgender persons to make them a part of the scheme. Their identification &/or verification procedure will be the same as in the case of other categories.
“The giveaway of the monetary assistance to all the entitled beneficiaries will be made in Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode,” said the spokesman.
The highly targeted transgender community in Jammu & Kashmir is feeling secured with the state government pronouncing various steps for their upliftment. This has happened after a very long time that the state has come up with schemes for the transgender community and included them for welfare measures for their safety and security.
"I put forward BPL category for transgender, along with medical insurance cover and free life with a monthly sustenance pension on the prototype of old-age pension for those who are above 60 and have enrolled themselves with the department of social welfare," stated J&K Finance Minister Dr Haseeb Ahmad Drabu.
