It has been almost three months since the pandemic has started across the globe and every section of society has faced consequences of the situation rendered by the covid-19. There were many sector which have not stopped working even under this stressful situation such as police, medical staff and the media. Earlier many in sentence were announced by the Delhi government for the coronavirus and now a similar order has been given by Karnataka High Court to consider and decide directions for the government and private media houses to provide rupees 50 lakh as a compensation to the family of the people working under media, newspaper delivery boys in case they are infected and died due to Novel coronavirus. The division bench of the court consisting justice BV Nagarathna and Justice Suraj govindaraj disposed the petition which was filed by Jacob George saying “the role of journalist and media personnel cannot be underestimated not undermined during this pandemic and just like police, doctors, nurses, government personnel and others who are carrying out essential duties in the same way, the journalist and other media personal are on the field work so as to disseminate and convey correct information to the citizens of the country about the impact of pandemic and also other information from the world over”. It was added that “the importance of the media in a democracy cannot be underestimated. Article 19 (1)(a) of the Constitution speaks about the freedom of speech and expression which include The Right to information and conversely, right to freedom of press and electronic media to communicate. The Right to information is the right to know,which is the important aspects of the right to freedom of speech and expression”. The court gave heed towards the work that media do and how journalist expose themselves to the risk under the difficult situation because of covid-19 and understood the seriousness of the work and gave directions accordingly.
