The union health ministry on Tuesday informed that there was no under reporting of death in India due to COVID-19. States are creating assessment of causalities and pointing causes of deaths due to non-Covid and Covid reasons.
The ministry also said that around 14 countries with a cumulative population which is almost equivalent to that of India’s and who were most affected have recorded 55.2 times more COVID-19 death and also 22.5 times more no. of cases.
Answering to a question on whether there is under reporting of COVID-19 causalities as various states are not testing the bodies for the infection, the senior scientist at the Indian Council of Medical Research, Nivedia gupta said that there was no under-reporting of corona virus deaths in the country.
India has been very superior with decrease in mortality, as matched up to the other countries.
She said that “A patient who is coming to the hospital and dies can be COVID-19 negative or positive and there can be other reasons and factors which are accountable for death. It is not reasonable to attribute every single death due to COVID-19.
The joint secretary for the health ministry Lav Agarwal also stated that there was “no under reporting of COVID-19 deaths”. He further said that “there was no irregular increase in the numbers and to a certain extent they have gone down.” It is not justified to just see the total no. of cases and affirm that India has the 7th highest no. of Covid cases as other major factor i.e. the population of other countries should also be taken into consideration while making such statements.
Exhibiting an age profile examination of death due to corona virus, Agarwal mentioned that 1 in every 2 covid-19 deaths that have happened in the country has been of senior citizens who contribute to 10% of the entire population.
