On 2nd June, a report was presented to th eInformations and Broadcast Minister, Prakashh Javadekar. The report was drafted and compiled by a committee of experts on Rationalisation/Closure/Merger of film Media Units under the I & B Ministry itself. The chairman of this meeting, Bimal Julka, joined in via the medium of video conferencing to discuss the report that has been submitted.
The committee was appointed to ensure the rationalisation and professionalisation of the numerous institutes in regard to film activities. The committee held a total number of 8 meetings to develop specific strategies for the development of various corporations and societies like National Film Development Corporation, Films division, Children’s Film Society of India, Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Directorate of Film Festivals, and National Film Archives of India etc. The committee has found overlapping activities undertaken by multiple institutes and has suggested an umbrella configuration with 4 broad verticals under which institutes should work viz. Production, Festival, Heritage and Knowledge.The committee reviewed the objective of these organizations to ensure and find out if they are still relevant and fulfill or serve the public purpose. The report also sought to examine if the public purpose served by them can be achieved in a more efficient manner. The government has to now contemplate on the merger, dissolution or revamping of these organisations as per their role.
The Minister, in the meeting, stated that the report shall be implemented and hold immense value in the future actions of the Ministry. He promised that the report’s recommendations will be put in action after due diligence.
