Today, the Supreme Court will hear a plea which was filed for the Centre to amend the Constitution and replace the word India with ‘Bharat’ or ‘Hindustan’, suggesting that this replace with ‘Bharat’ or ‘Hindustan’ will instil a sense of pride in the nationality.
The plea seeks a direction to the government to take the appropriate steps to amend Article 1 of the Indian Constitution, which is about the name and territory of the Union, to the effect that it refers to the country as Bharat or Hindustan.
The petition was to be heard on Friday before the Supreme Court but it was transferred to be heard today as CJI S A Bobde was unavailable on Friday.
A notice was passed on the website of the Apex court that this matter would be heard on June 2nd before a bench headed by the CJI.
The plea was filed by a man based in Delhi. He claimed that such an amendment will allow the citizens of this country to move on from the colonial past.
He stated in his plea that removal of this English name even if it appears symbolic, it will instil a sense of pride among the citizens. It will instil even more pride to the future generation to come. It would justify the hard fight fought by our ancestors.
Addressing the 1948 Constituent assembly, the plea referred to the debate on Article 1 of the then drafting constitution. The plea stated that even then there was huge support about renaming the name of the country to Bharat or Hindustan.
The plea stated that now is the time to recognize the country by its original name which is Bharat when the cities have already been renamed to reflect the Indian ethos
